It’s all relative, we have to take into account the type of noise emitting source and the proximity between emitter and receiver. The bothersome noise factor also varies from one geographical area to another. For the most silent places with the least tolerant legislation, noise allowed in the permeability of walls or insulation is 3dB above environmental noise. However, if the idea is to make music or play an instrument inside an apartment, you should know that this is not allowed. You’ll have to find a compromising solution and count on your neighbour’s understanding.

It varies, since each space is unique due to its size, shape and materials that have been applied in it, thus being possible to determine reverberation time. More important than to have the average of the adequate “RT”, is to have the values within that average balanced in 1/3 octaves intervals. These values should not differ more than +/- 20% in order to have a balanced time from frequency to frequency.

Reverberation is an acoustic effect that takes place when the acoustic energy generated from a noise emitting source is sent back by the surfaces (floor, walls and ceiling). It occurs when the sound is reflected on those several surfaces and is then heard with the referred “reverb” effect. In most cases, the reverberation time should ideally be reduced, so that the “reverb” effect is not perceived by the receiver. However, there are places where some reverberation must be added to help propagate the sound, such as in auditoriums.

R: No. In order for the panels to reach the desired acoustic effect, they have to face the existing surfaces, at the very most they can be built-in. For example, a Mellowalltrap works perfectly in front of a false ceiling, whereas diffusion panels lose their efficiency even if they are covered with a fine piece of cloth.
It’s better to ask our opinion before embarking on such a project.

An absorption panel, as its name suggests, is meant to absorb. It dissipates the acoustic energy inside it and only reflects a small amount. The diffusion panels fragment and diffuse that energy by scattering it. In order to reduce and control reverberation in rooms, we use absorbers or a combination of absorber/diffuser, since diffusers also fragment the sound in a controlled way. In other cases, when a reverberation increase is intended, diffusers are then used to increase the reverberation time.
